What is Clinical Nutrition?

Clinical nutrition was developed by Doctors of Chiropractic, this approach to our diet and nutrition better addresses modern healthcare needs of our society. Clinical Nutrition is often referred to as lab-based nutrition, science-based nutrition, and most recently functional medicine. This integrative approach,  addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and creating a team approach with doctor and patient. By being patient-centered, functional medicine addresses the whole person, rather than merely focusing on a set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners work with their patients, listening to their health history and looking at genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors and interactions which can affect long-term health and chronic disease. Functional medicine supports each individual’s unique expression of health and vitality.

Why Do We Need Clinical Nutrition?
Our society is producing a marked increase people who suffer from chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, COPD, mental illness, and autoimmune disorders like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Most care is oriented toward crisis, or acute care, for which the diagnosis and treatment are of short duration that aims to treat the immediate problem or symptom. However, crisis care is not suited for preventing and treating chronic disease, as it does not take into account the individual genetic makeup or environmental exposures to toxins and aspects of modern Western society that have a direct influence on the rise in chronic disease.
